For wine ENTHUSIASTS to taste, sip, and dine

An epic year

1855 was the year of the first official classification of Bordeaux wines following the World’s Fair in Paris. Bordeaux is, of course, known as being one of the most prestigious wine regions of the world and a good glass of Bordeaux is a rite of passage for learning to love a good bottle of wine. This was the inspiration for our bar à vin (wine bar) – to inspire a love of wine.

La Voile & Bar à vin 1855

La Voile, serving up its French bistro fare, has been a Newbury Street staple for more than a decade. Over the past few years, the wine list at the restaurant has grown exponentially in order to continue to delight and surprise its local and international clientele. Still, the team at La Voile had bigger visions for the wines it could make available to help foster an even deeper love of French wine in Boston – hence the opening of 1855, located just above La Voile on Newbury Street.

Our Vision

1855’s wine list is comprised of more than 250 different varieties of French wine, not only from Bordeaux, but from across France. Above and beyond including well-known classics on the list at 1855, we wanted to highlight some of the little-known gems that can be discovered from boutique, small batch vineyards. For those who want to deepen their oenological knowledge, we host a variety of tastings, classes, and special wine events.

The décor will immerse you in the world of wine—with chairs crafted by a local carpenter out of wine barrels, tables made from wooden wine cases, and wine themed art all around—making wine the centerpiece of your experience.

The 1855 Bar à Vin also features traditional French cuisine, served primarily in the form of delicious small plates, thus presented in a more casual and shareable way than at a traditional restaurant. We also offer full course menus for those who want to stay for dinner, and for those who want to stay for brunch on the weekends. 1855’s relaxing, casual, and friendly atmosphere is the perfect spot for friends to hang out with a glass of wine – or a cocktail or a beer if preferred – whether after work, for dinner, for brunch, for weekend gatherings, or for special occasions.
